Buttock or Calf augmentation surgery is a procedure performed to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s buttock or calf by surgically placing an implant deep to the deep fascia to increase its volume and enhance its shape. You may want to restore your leg or buttock shape due to changes that occur after weight loss, childbirth or as a result of aging. In each of these types of cases, the effect of calf or buttock augmentation is not only an improved physical appearance but can also enhance your self-esteem.
Am I a good candidate for the surgery?
Buttock or Calf augmentation can enhance your appearance and your self-esteem, but it won’t necessarily change your looks to match your ideal, or cause other people to treat you differently.
The best candidates for calf or buttock augmentation are women who are looking for improvement in the way they look. If you’re physically healthy and realistic in your expectations and have a reasonable desire to have your buttocks or calf enlarged you may be an appropriate candidate.
Buttock/Calf Implant Options for the 21st Century
The availability of FDA-approved silicone gel implants created new options for women considering calf/buttock surgery.
What type of implants can be used for augmentation?
All implants include a solid silicone rubber outer shell, called a lumen.
Buttock/Calf implant options include:
- Saline implants: Filled with sterile salt water. Saline implants may be pre-filled to a predetermined size. Saline may also be filled at the time of surgery to allow for minor modifications in implant size.
- Silicone filled implants: Filled with soft, elastic gel. All silicone implants are pre-filled and modern implants are usually textured to avoid capsular contraction and filled with cohesive gel.
What should I expect from my consultation?
During the consultation, you will be asked about your desired calf/buttock size and anything else related to your appearance that you feel is important. Dr. Wilson will examine your calf/buttock and will consider such factors as the size and shape, the quality of your skin and the placement of your hip/knee creases. You may find it helpful to bring examples of buttock sizes from magazines to illustrate your desired size.
How is the surgery performed?
The method of inserting and positioning your implant will depend on your anatomy, individual factors and personal preferences. Dr. Wilson will help you determine your appropriate calf/buttock size, the location of incisions, and exact placement of the implants.
The incision can be made either in the crease under the hip or in the knee. Every effort will be made to assure that the incision is placed so resulting scars will be as inconspicuous as possible.
Working through the incision, Dr. Wilson will gently lift your subcutaneous tissue and skin to create symmetrical pockets, either directly under the fascia (calf) or underneath your gluteal muscle (buttock). He will then insert the implants and fill them with saltwater. The surgery usually takes 1 to 2 hours to complete. Sutures are used to close the incisions, which may also be taped for greater support. An elastic stocking or corset may be applied to help with healing and to reduce swelling.
Risks of calf/buttock Augmentation:
There is no scientific evidence that calf/buttock augmentation increases the risk of cancer.
If you are planning to lose a significant amount of weight, be sure to tell your plastic surgeon. He or she may recommend that you stabilize your weight prior to undergoing surgery.
